Bengaluru: Short video platform TikTok has seen its rating drop to two stars from 4.6 stars in the last one week on Google app store after an Internet war erupted between a YouTube influencer and TikTok creator in India.
It all started when TikTok creator Amir Siddiqui posted a video on Instagram calling out YouTubers. In his video, Siddiqui accused YouTubers of plagiarizing TikTok content and losing out on brand endorsements. Popular roaster Ajey Nagar, known as CarryMinati, lashed out against Siddiqui's video on YouTube, which was later taken down for violating the platform's terms of service. The video that registered millions of views was expletive-laden.
After his video was deleted on YouTube, his fans started a trend #RoastNahiFryKarunga and #BanTikTok on Twitter. #BanTikTokInIndia, #TikTokdown, #TikTokexposed were also trending on the micro-blogging platform.

Twitter saw an explosion of memes targeting TikTok and Amir Siddique, urging people to downgrade the app. Several anti-China and TikTok critics have jumped on the bandwagon asking for a ban on the Chinese platform, accusing its creators of promoting violence, hate, and acid attacks.
While hashtags asking for a ban on TikTok are not new, the recent campaign not only targets the ByteDance-owned platform but also its creators, who largely hail from smaller towns in India. Right-wing activists, including Vikas Pandey, have accused the platform of promoting terrorism, Islamic conversion, and vulgar videos.
Email sent to TikTok did not elicit a response
TikTok has more than 200 million users in India and remains one of the most popular social media apps in the country. It has been downloaded more than 2 billion times globally on the App Store and Google Play, according to Sensor Tower Store Intelligence's latest estimates.
HIGHLIGHTS
TikTok has been banned after it was found to host content related to child pornography.
Google and Apple were requested to pull down the app from their app stores.
TikTok members can still use the app and the service.
Last year, the Indian government issued a ban on all pornographic websites and platforms in the country for hosting content related to child pornography. In a follow up to that, the government issued a ban on the popular short video platform TikTok on Tuesday after it was found to host content related to child pornography. Obliging to the government order, Apple and Google pulled off the TikTok app from their respective app stores.
The ban has been implemented in a way that prevents the distribution of the app on all app stores. Therefore, not only Google and Apple but other app stores such as the Mi Apps on Xiaomi phones and App Store on Vivo phones also removed TikTok from their list. Despite the removal of the app, the service is still operational and those who have the app installed can continue to use the app.
Here's a rundown on all the proceedings that have taken place so far with regards to the TikTok ban in India.
Why is TikTok banned?
TikTok has been banned after the platform was found to host content related to child pornography. The government issued a formal ban on all pornographic websites last year that hosted child pornography. The ban has been imposed to prevent the promotion of child-related crimes.
What has the ban resulted in so far?
With the ban, the Madras High Court has put a stop to the distribution of the app on all popular smartphone platforms. The court directed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to issue a ban on the app, following which Google and Apple were requested to pull down the app from their respective app stores.
